Ryen has comprehensive experience in the fields of intellectual property, complex business transactions, and business-related litigation. Ryen specializes in the drafting of contracts and operations documents; resolution of business and intellectual property-related disputes; and counseling in the fields of corporate, employment, and software law. Ryen also serves the firm’s clients by providing mergers and acquisitions-related advice and conducting regulatory oversight reviews to ensure that clients’ businesses are compliant and protected to the maximum extent.

Ryen formerly served as law clerk to Chief Judge Karen J. Burrell and the Hon. Louis A. Sherman of the Norfolk Circuit Court. While in law school, Ryen worked at a Top 200 law firm in Washington D.C., a Hampton Roads law firm specializing in entertainment law and small business-related issues, and the office of legal counsel at a major state educational institution.

Ryen graduated magna cum laude from the William & Mary Law School in 2012, and was honored with the ABA-BNI Award for Excellence in the Study of Intellectual Property Law and the Lewis B. Puller, Jr., Veterans Benefits Clinic Award for Excellence upon his graduation. He graduated summa cum laude from The College of William & Mary in 2009, and was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa society during his senior year.

Ryen is admitted to practice law in Virginia and Washington, D.C. Outside of his work with the firm, Ryen is active with a number of local bar associations and intellectual property law-related organizations. Ryen also volunteers time with several non-profit organizations that seek to promote education and positive youth development. 

Ryen started practicing law on 10/24/2012.

Professional Experience:

  • Obtained summary judgment on all counts in favor of the client in a trade secret claim involving the law of four different states. Integrated Direct Mktg., LLC v. May, 129 F. Supp. 3d 336 (E.D. Va. 2015).
  • Assisted multiple clients in arranging and completing the sales of their businesses and purchases of new businesses.
  • Successfully negotiated private settlement of trademark infringement claims, resulting in favorable outcomes for mark owners and defending parties.
  • Coordinated trademark, copyright, and patent license terms for rights owners and licensees in the entertainment and business contexts.
  • Drafted complete suites of legal documentation for numerous software, SaaS, and technology systems.
  • Assisted with the reorganization and modernization of large families of businesses to ensure compliance and efficiency.
